In today’s world where almost everyone is dependent on the internet, reviews matter for those who are looking for employment, products, services and many more. For example, a job seeker will search for King Kong reviews to learn more about the company’s working conditions while a consumer will make the effort to read product reviews before making an informed purchase decision.
Jessica, not her real name, is an Amazon customer who spent more than $15,000 on Halloween decorations, queen-size inflatable mattress, 3 vacuum cleaners, 6 desk chairs and 26 pairs of ear buds. Most of the products were cheaply made but Jessica gave them 5-star reviews. The companies that sell the products through Amazon reimbursed Jessica for her purchases.
Jessica told Buzzfeed that her 5-star reviews with photos and a video is not gaming the system. She wants the brands to grow in Amazon’s massive marketplace. Third-party sellers need good reviews and high search ranking to make it to Amazon. However, attracting genuine customers is tough and some of the 3rd party sellers use bribes that they usually get away with.
Amazon has already banned the system of providing free products in exchange for reviews. Jessica requested for anonymity because she fears that Amazon may suspend her account. Sellers reach out to Jessica through targeted Facebook ads with dedicated review groups with thousands of members. Jessica is given instructions to purchase their products through Amazon and leave a 5-star review.
As far as Amazon is concerned, Jessica’s actions are legitimate. She uses her own Amazon account to make purchases. Her reviews are considered as verified purchase. After the sellers have confirmed that Jessica has made a 5-star review, they reimburse her through PayPal or Amazon gift card.
Consultants who work with 3rd party sellers in Amazon say that the system is being exploited by bad actors without any consequences. Jessica and other reviewers benefit from sellers who are willing to cheat.
Aside from search ranking, King Kong reviews have a huge impact on job seekers. People who are seeking for employment opportunities usually check out reviews to determine which companies prioritize work-life balance and career growth and whether the pay is good.
