Quebec has announced a pilot project to help the victims of sexual abuse. The legal clinic for sexual abuse victims will provide the victims with legal aid and support, to fight the cases of sexual assault. The government announced that Juripop Legal clinic will be granted a sum of $2.6 million to provide legal aid and service to the sexual abuse victims in the province. Justice Minister of Quebec Sonia LeBel announced that this is the first step and other measures will soon be implemented to support the victims of sexual abuse. The project will begin in January 2020 and will last till Match 31, 2021. The initiative is unanimously supported by the three main opposition parties of Quebec and is a part of the program to provide better support to the victims of sexual assault.
The legal clinic will not force victims into the judicial process, if they are not comfortable with the process of going to court. Instead Juripop legal clinic will support the victims, and explain to them the options available for a legal recourse. It will connect the victims to the police and also provide necessary information about criminal lawyer, support groups etc. to help the victims in taking informed decisions.
Juripop legal clinic has begun recruiting lawyers and other professionals to help the victims of sexual abuse. The clinics will soon start accepting sexual abuse survivors across Quebec. The clinic will start operations from the coming spring and will also provide interpretative services for victims, who do not understand English and French.
The legal clinic provides legal aid and support that is tailored to meet the requirements of each individual case. The clinics customizes its programs around the needs of the victim rather than trying to fit them into pre-determined notions. Though the program is primarily designed to help adult survivors of sexual abuse, it will also help victims, who are minors. It will help to steer the minor victims of sexual abuse in the right direction by offering legal aid and support.
