Grocery stores are struggling during the coronavirus pandemic. Shoplifting has increased and they receive little response from the city to stop the crime. The number of homeless people has increased tremendously and they are stealing food and other stuff. Groceries are placed in a bad position.
According to Pedro Goico, general secretary of the National Supermarket Association, store owners do not have the capability to handle theft. The police respond to calls after 3 or 4 hours. The mentally ill enter the stores because of the lack of resources from the city.
The National Supermarket Association supports the NYPD but changes need to happen. Goico points out that the police must remember that when they wore the uniform, they took an oath to protect the City of New York and its citizens. He understands that there are issues regarding the color of skin but the issues must be set aside because the people of New York and the grocery owners need them.
Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said that thefts in stores are mandatory to receive a desk appearance ticket before the individual is put back on the street. There are people who have never been in trouble before but are now stealing food so that they can eat. The police do not want to put these people in jail. However, people do the crime over and over again which is very frustrating.
The police are open to meetings with grocery owners to discuss the thefts. Goico said that he will sit down with the commissioner because the problem is bigger than desk appearance tickets. He also said that the mayor needs to take charge of the city because there are a lot of homeless and mentally ill persons. There are food drives where food is given out for free but it is not enough.
If you are accused of shoplifting or retail crime, your best option is to call MyDefence.ca immediately for your own protection. While shoplifting is considered as a lesser offense, a serious charge has consequences. The severity of the sentence will depend on the total value of stolen items which means that you are facing fines or a short amount of jail time.
